Homophobia Hurts Everyone

26 02 2009

At a recent conference I attended , the keynote speaker’s main message was “Homophobia hurts everyone.” This message is completely true, weather it’s yourself , a classmate or a friend being targeted by homophobia it hurts everyone weather you realize it or not. Homophobia may limit relationships and communication with friends and family because  they don’t feel comfortable discussing such issues. In addition, homophobia can be used as a way to silence/target people who are perceived to be GLBT, when in fact they may not be.  Homophobia from society can inhibit development of self-identity with can cause people to feel insecure of who they are, especially at a young age. In general, “Homophobia hurts everyone.”

i agree that it does limit family and relationship because the other person might not be so comfortable with talking about this issue. But i think its up to the other person in this family to relationship to make it eayser for them to talk about so that this issue is brought up and can something that both family and friends and others to you are comfortable with and wont gay bash people because they know how it hurts others.

I think the most affected are those who feel unsafe to be themselves in a society that is extremely homophobic. Where common slang is full of disrespectful remarks and hurtful sentiments. Many people don’t think about the impact of their words and its time they were erased from common speak. How can we do that?
